We classified road markings into detailed categories, checked how far each was occluded, and graded its physical quality — three judgements in a single automated pass over the network.
The challenge
The client needed a complete, automated inventory of every marking — temporary and permanent — with precise classification of line patterns and symbols, plus an objective read on visibility and condition that manual surveys could not provide consistently.
Our approach
Working from high-resolution aerial and satellite imagery, our models:
- distinguished temporary yellow lines from permanent white lines;
- classified line types — dashed_line, long_line (longer warning dashes), small_broken_line and more;
- classified other markings — crosswalks, arrows, stop lines, restricted zones, words and standard symbols;
- detected occlusion where markings were covered by shadow, vehicles, debris or wear;
- graded each line into three quality levels: Good, Medium and Bad.
Results & benefits
- A complete, attributed inventory of road markings and their condition.
- Quality grading that tells maintenance teams what to repaint first.
- Occlusion awareness so faded and hidden markings are not silently missed.
